Hebraic Musing – What Was God’s Plan for Man, His Creation?
Psalm 1:1-3 describes the Righteous Man. “Blessed
is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way
of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the
law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is
like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and
whose leaf does not wither. Whatever
he does prospers.” NIV
Then verses
4-6 deal with consequences due the
ungodly. “Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. Therefore
the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly
of the righteous. For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but
the way of the wicked will perish.”
The
psalmist continues giving good advice
in Psalm 2:10-12 and a hint of the Son who is to come. “Therefore,
you kings, be wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. Serve the LORD
with fear and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be
angry and you be destroyed in your way, for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
Blessed are all who take refuge in
him….”
In the third Psalm, David, recognizes that the LORD is clearly with him! “But
you are a shield around me, O LORD; you bestow glory on me and lift up my
head. To the LORD I cry aloud, and he
answers me from his holy hill. Selah
I lie down and sleep; I wake again, because the LORD sustains
me.” Ps.3:3-5
I was
listening by audio to Psalms/songs this AM and was struck by the two types of
MEN in the opening verses, the Righteous and the ungodly. David as a righteous man reached out in Psalm 5:1-2.
“Give ear to my words, O LORD, consider my
sighing. Listen to my cry for help, my King and my God, for to you I
pray.”
Then Psalm 8 wonderfully describes the LORD and His
plan to send a Man!
·
♫ “O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! ♫
·
You have set your glory above
the heavens.
·
From the lips of children and
infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe
and the avenger.
·
When I consider your heavens,
the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in
place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man
that you care for him?
·
You
made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with
glory and honor.
·
You made him ruler
over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: all
flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, the birds of the air, and
the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas.
·
♫
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”
♫ Psalm 8:1-9
What did the LORD make us to be?
A - Just a little lower than heavenly beings! (Elohim in Hebrew) WOW!
Finally,
Psalm 12:1-2 describes the result of mankind’s failure to recognize
the LORD. “Help, LORD, for the godly are no more; the faithful have vanished from
among men. Everyone lies to his neighbor; their flattering lips speak
with deception.” And Psalm 14 describes the folly of the Godless by starting with “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God.’”
I had a
diverse morning by reading the daily news and then “listening” to Psalms 1 to
22!!! Try it.
Points to ponder
What has man
done with the choices the LORD gave him?
Can you start
read Psalm 8 without breaking into song?
Is the
unnamed “Man” in Psalm 8 about us? Or
about a Son who is promised to us?
Whose name is
Majestic in all the earth?
♫ I
will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever, I will sing I will sing.
With
my mouth will I make known Thy faithfulness to all generations. ♫ Psalm 89:1
