Hebraic Musing - God Hates Sin, but does God Love Sinners?

How often have we encountered someone committing an obvious sin or living a sinful lifestyle?  And to comfort them and avoid confrontation, we say “God hates sin, but He loves the sinner.”  But is that true?

What do the Psalms say?  (Here’s a few to start, read more Psalms to see what God has to say about sinners.)  

·      “The arrogant cannot stand in your presence; you hate all who do wrong.  You destroy those who tell lies; bloodthirsty and deceitful men the LORD abhors.”  Psalms 5:5-6  NIV

·      “For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.” Ps.1:6

·      “Kiss the Son, lest he be angry and you be destroyed in your way…”  Ps.2:12

·      “Deliver me, O my God! Strike all my enemies on the jaw; break the teeth of the wicked.” Ps.3:7

Right after the oft quoted John 3:16, we are viewed by Jesus himself as “Condemned” in v.18b.  “…whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son.”  And the final result is in v.36 - “Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him.”

When Jesus was going into the Garden of Gethsemane Matthew reports “Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, ‘My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me.’” Matt. 26:39   The “Cup” is not reference to the wooden cross; He was referring to divine judgment, the cup of God’s wrath.

Does the Gospel call us to “accept Him”?  Or to fully recognize who He really is?  “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.  Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'”  Matt. 7:21-23  Who really does the “Will of the Father”?  

In his book “Radical” * David Platt makes this statement – “Our American dream radically differs from the call of Jesus and the essence of the gospel.  This differentiation is heightened when we contrast trust in the power of God with reliance on our own abilities.”  Our DIY nature wants to take over!

And David Platt goes on to say we have a problem with our modern day gospel which tells us “God loves you and has a wonderful plan for your life.  Therefore, follow these steps and you can be saved.”  HOWEVER the Biblical gospel says “You are an enemy of God, dead in your sin, and in your present state of rebellion, you are not even able to see that you need life, much less to cause yourself to come to life.  Therefore, you are radically dependent on God to do something in your life that you could never do.”  Which “Gospel” sells books and which one saves souls?

We live in a culture, especially in America, that exalts self-sufficiency, self-esteem and self-confidence.  We are taught that if we set goals and work hard we can achieve anything our heart desires.  These are good attributes; BUT do we leave room for God to have a role in the result? 

Has the church reduced Jesus to someone who simply needs to be accepted?  Or is He to be our LORD, BOSS and MASTER?

Points to ponder

After all, who is God anyway?!?!

Do we really trust in God’s Omniscience, Omnipresence and Omnipotence?

If hard work and diligence gets our heart’s desire, why do we need God?

Hebraic Musing – Are We Supposed to be Building Our Church?

If we are busy building our churches, who is building the Kingdom of God?  Many in the pews of our churches would agree that we “ought to be building Our Church” and they are busy doing just that – decorating the building, designing programs to attract nickels and noses, inviting, supporting the building program, etc.  

Jesus took his disciples on a field trip to the region of Caesarea Philippi where many different gods were being worshipped.  “He asked His disciples, saying, ‘Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?’  So they said, ‘Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.’”  Matthew 16:13-14  NKJV    Doesn’t that sound like today’s world?   If you ask people who Jesus is, you get a variety of answers!

Then Jesus got in their face and asked the most important question in v.15 - “But who do you say that I am?”    Impetuous Peter answered in v.17 - “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”   So Jesus complimented Peter with “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.”

Then Jesus explains to them the reason for this field trip to the North-East corner of Israel.  (BTW – I think He is speaking to us also.)  “And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.  And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.” Mt. 16:18-19  NKJV  

What did Jesus reveal to His 12 disciples and to us?

·      Peter, your answer shows your faith and it is solid as a rock.  So on this rock I will build My church, on that Rock of Faith. (Not Our church, HIS CHURCH, built on the faith of believers)

·      Jesus also told Peter that there is a kingdom of heaven and He is giving to Peter, and to you, the keys to HIS Kingdom with access to all the privileges.

Consider that Jesus mentions the word “church” only twice in the Gospels (Mt.16:18 & 18:17); that’s all!  But Jesus refers to the “Kingdom” over 50 times in Matthew alone.   Toward the end of Matthew 6 Jesus describes the things we people desire and need and then in v.33 He concludes - “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.”   

The Jews were a lot like us, worrying about politics, nations, kingdoms and rulers.  So in Acts 1:6 the Jews  asked  “Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?”  Wrong focus!  Shouldn’t we all be working to restore the Kingdom of God here on earth?  In fact, Jesus tells us where we should all put our focus.  “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:7-8 NIV 

Points to ponder

Would you rather have the keys to your church; or the keys to the Kingdom of God?

If we are His witnesses to the uttermost parts of the earth, will that grow the Kingdom of God?

What a thrill it is to introduce members to His Church!

What can we unlock with the keys He has given us to His Kingdom?

Hebraic Musing – Are You Simply a Christian?   Or Are You an Overcomer?

"Right and wrong" - truth and righteousness - do not matter to any other species on Earth except us humans, because the ability to choose is for decision making – RIGHT(eousness) vs WRONG.  This is an important matter for us because we will be judged and our place in eternity determined because we are made in God's Image.  We don’t want to rely on the counterfeit “social justice” being demanded by the “world.”  We want the personal responsibility required biblically.

Unfortunately all too many Christians have been led to believe that Christianity is just a behavior modification system of morals.  No wonder the “world”, and many Christians, see no difference between Christianity and "the many other paths to God."  People want to believe that if something FEELS good, then it IS GOOD.  So "we are good" preaching emanates from pulpits motivated by the fact that to make the mortgage payments, pastors have to avoid offending the “nickels and noses.” 

Thus in the last year especially, a numbness is overtaking Christianity in America.  America’s leadership is boldly declaring “we do not want or need God.”  It is not surprising that God has taken His righteousness and departing, leaving us with "might makes right."  BLM and ANTIFA supported by some big businesses and media have become the dominant "might makes right" force with full support passive media support.  No wonder they want to defund police.  Police are the only possible opposition to their extortion racket. 

American Christians are COWERING!  We wanted and expected own bully called Trump to do the dirty work of politics while we prayed and complained and prayed some more.  But now that Trump is gone we can begin to see the irrelevance, cowardice and persecution of American Christianity being revealed.

Do Christians pay attention to the importance of ALL the “overcomer” verses in the Bible?  Who gets eternal life?  Why does the challenge to be an “Overcomer” appears over 30 times in our Bible!!! 

Here are some rewards promised to “he who overcomes”:

Enthronement – Rev. 3:21  “To him who overcomes, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne,
             just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on his throne.”  NIV

Eternal Inheritance – Rev. 21:7  “He who overcomes will inherit all this, I will be his God, he will be my son.”

New Name – Rev. 2:17  “To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna.
             I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.”

Authority – Rev. 2:26   “To him who overcomes and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations“

Robe of Righteousness – Rev. 3:5  “He who overcomes will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out
            his name from the book of life, but will acknowledge his name before my Father and his angels.”

Spiritual Food – Rev. 2:7  “To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life,
            which is in the paradise of God.”

No Second Death – Rev. 2:11   “He who overcomes will not be hurt at all by the second death.”

And here’s some homework – John 16:33;  1 John 5:4-5;  1 John 2:13

Points to ponder

Since only the overcomers get an eternal reward, what happens to NON-overcomers?
   If a pastor points this out will he lose “nickels & noses”?

Is God allowing these social pressures, these Satanic originated challenges,
so that we and HE can see who is overcoming and who is NOT!!!!

The media has taken control of the narrative.  Hmmm…
Jesus was convicted and crucified not by the evidence, but by the world’s narrative.

When Isaiah is recognizing the LORD and acknowledging who God really is, he makes a statement that parallels the three branches of government in our constitution!  “For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; it is he who will save us.”  Isaiah 33:22   Let’s take a closer look.

How does the Bible defines those three key words?

JUDGE – (1^st mention) When Sarai and Abram disagreed, they recognized “…May the LORD judge between you and me.” Gen. 16:5 NIV   So a key role of the LORD is to judge matters.  Definition of a Judge – “a public official authorized to decide questions brought before a court.”   What public official is more qualified to decide questions of right and wrong than our LORD?

LAWGIVER – Judah’s blessing from Jacob was “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, Nor a lawgiver from between his feet, Until Shiloh (the Messiah) comes; And to Him shall be the obedience of the people.”  Gen.49:10 NKJV  This is an early prophesy of the Lord Jesus coming as a clarifier of the Law of Moses.  Moses gets credit for being a Lawgiver, but where did he get the Ten Commandments?  “These are the commands, decrees and laws the LORD your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,”  Deut.6:1 NIV

KING – The word “King” appears about 1,800 times in the  Bible.  Melech (מלך) is the Hebrew word for king, Symbolically the Mem Lamed Khaph means – “Truth Revealed; Prod/Teach; Open Hand” which is an interesting description of a King’s role – Prods & teaches the truth with an open (giving) hand.  

And here is how the Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary explains Isa.33:22:
Lord—thrice repeated, as often: the Trinity (Nu 6:24-26).  judge … lawgiver … king—perfect ideal of the theocracy, to be realized under Messiah alone; the judicial, legislative, and administrative functions as king to be exercised by Him in person (Isa 11:4; 32:1; Jas 4:12).

How are the three branches of our Constitutional Government organized?

Legislative—Makes laws (Congress, comprised of the House of Representatives and Senate)

Executive—Enforces or Carries out laws (president, vice president, Cabinet, most federal agencies)

Judicial—Interprets, Evaluates & Applies the laws (Supreme Court and other courts)

James Madison was one of the authors and is considered "The Father of the Constitution."  He realized that no single branch should have complete control.  He said “The accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elected, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny.”

Remember, the authors of the Constitution lived in a time when powerful autocratic kings, czars, and emperors ruled nearly all the countries of the world.  They had come to this country to avoid such rulers and wanted to avoid the possibility of any one person seeking to have all the power of government in this new land.  

Like our constitutional government, we serve a LORD who makes laws, carries out those laws and judges the obedience to those laws.

Who is our Advocate when we reach judgement?

Is this “History Lesson” still taught in our schools today?

Does any other country have a government “of the people, by the people, for the people”?

How well do the three branches of our government respect each other’s roles?

 Do these three branches of our Government remind us of the Trinity?  How?

Hebraic Musing – Who was Jesus Talking to in Matthew 10?

Was Jesus talking to others in the church, or was He talking to you?  He said “ I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. Be on your guard against men; they will hand you over to the local councils and flog you in their synagogues.  On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.” Matthew 10:16-18 NIV  
- Who is doing the sending?  Jesus himself!     And who is He sending?  YOU (not some other person)
- What can you expect?   You will be like “Sheep among wolves” so be shrewd and innocent and be on guard.
- What will happen?  You WILL BE arrested, beaten and brought before the authorities.
- Why?  To be a witness to the non-believers.   Why?  Jesus said so, but there’s more…!
- But when that happens, how am I to respond?  Jesus anticipated your question.  “But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.”  Matt.10:19-20  Jesus did not say “if” they arrest you; He said “When.”  And He told us to worry not.  Then Jesus made an important promise – “you will be given what to say” by the Holy Spirit.  Be patient because we know God is never early, nor is He ever late; He’s always Just In Time.  God invented JIT!
- Is this designed to “make friends”?   The world tells us to make friends; but Jesus’ priority is to get souls into His Kingdom.  In fact Jesus knows that making friends is not the priority and says so.  “Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.  All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.” Mt.10:21-22   Yes, Jesus did make it clear that “ALL men will hate you because of me.”  These are harsh words. 
- How important is your comfortable life on earth compared with eternal salvation for your neighbors whom you are commanded to love?  This challenge to our worldly lifestyle required Jesus to put it in perspective.  “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” Mt.10:28   Let’s keep our devotion to our LORD and Savior Jesus in perspective; There ain’t nothing more important.  We like to preach love and peace, but Jesus reminds us “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.”  Mt.10:34  
- Where else do we hear of Jesus and a sword?  “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword…” Hebrews 4:12

- Why is this message becoming more important recently?   The Progressive agenda in America is attacking our rights to Life, Liberty and Pursuit of Happiness.  Churches are under attack methodically right out of the Marxist playbook.  Churches in America gave their right to operate to the IRS years ago (i.e. 501c3 tax deductibility) and now our government is exercising control.  If you don’t believe this, how have our church fellowships been affected by “Executive Orders” recently?  We pray for a Great Awakening so America can get back to God; BUT what if that does not happen?  What if the nation’s ungodly ways persist and churches and Christianity face serious persecution? 

Believe It or Not – Recent Barna survey claims less than half of Christians “have heard of the Great Commission,” and furthermore, only 17% of “Christians” know what it means!

How many people do we encounter who are destined to Hell?

What’s the most loving thing you can do for your neighbor?

It’s about winning souls for God’s Kingdom; it’s not about winning arguments or making friends.

Are we prepared to stand for righteousness WHEN (not if) persecution comes?

Are you prepared to open your home as a House Church for fellowship survival if necessary?

Christians, what are you afraid of?

Hebraic Musing – Does the Bible Really Support Socialism?

Some point out that Jesus preached compassion toward the poor; and the church in Jerusalem “had everything in common”; and Ananias & Sapphira were struck down because they held back wealth for themselves.  Those shallow arguments are twisted to justify socialism, but maybe they support Capitalism; let’s look more closely.

 “All the (Jerusalem) believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. Acts 4:32 NIV   But vs.34-35 have the explanations of how that worked. “There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had need.”  Did you notice that they “brought the money”?  Big difference, it was not taken from them!

What did Ananias & Sapphira do to get struck down?  Peter explained “How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord?” Acts 5:9  It was because they lied to the Lord; not for holding back their money! 

The Protestant Work Ethic

The Bible teaches Biblical principles – hard work, discipline and frugality.  (“Work” appears almost 400 times in the Bible!)   “A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from the hand of God,” Ecc.2:24    “If a man will not work, he shall not eat.” 2 Thess.3:10   And “Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth.” Prov.10:4     In Socialism, Greed is institutionalized.  There’s no reward for hard work!  I have experienced working in Communist countries with a workforce of people with no incentive.  Sad state of affairs!  Overheard in a Communist country – “We pretend to work; they pretend to pay us.”

Jesus gives us sound wealth management advice - “I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.”  Luke 16:9    Ownership of wealth was obvious and assumed, or why would Moses have to command “Thou Shall Not Steal”?

What happens to Wealth in Socialism?

Germany, Yugoslavia and Venezuela are recent examples of Marxist Socialism being destroyed by inflation.  While Americans are greedily looking forward to receiving “Stimulus Money”, consider this.  My 11 year old home-schooled Granddaughter read an economics book “Whatever Happened to Penny Candy.”  So when the stimulus money came out, my daughter explained to her it was to help people.  So Charity replied “But if everyone gets more money, doesn’t that just mean everything will cost more?  Isn’t it called inflation when the government just gives away money?  Where does it come from?”  That’s understanding and wisdom from an 11 year-old!  Why don’t more people understand economics?  Money is not free!

Capitalism or Socialism, which is better?

One is designed to meet the real needs of consumers/customers; the other operates without need to benefit people.

Could a corporation like Boeing, which requires a motivated workforce, be developed in a socialistic system?

It is often proposed that “Capitalism is based on greed and Socialism is based on need.”   But actually, the opposite is true.  Capitalists are motivated and incentivized to create businesses that meet people’s needs. 

Socialism has failed because of corruption and greed.  It would work if the leaders were unflawed persons (an oxymoron).  Neither system is perfect; even Capitalism has flaws that need correcting because we are fallen humans only capable of seeking the better solution.  Only God creates perfection!

Socialism always speaks about distributing wealth, never about creating it. 

Why do mice die in mousetraps?  They don’t understand why the cheese is free.

Why did a Kibbutz leader in Israel say “It has become a paradise for parasites”? 

Which system is more open to greed and corruption?

Which system emphasizes “Giving”?  Which one requires “Taking”?

“That your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you” Mt.6:4

 Hebraic Musing – Why Are Christians the “Happiest People on Earth”?

In 1966 I attended sales training with Combined Insurance Company, founded by W. Clement Stone, known for promoting the “Positive Mental Attitude”.  The training class had a song drilled into us that is still in me to this day.  ♫ Happiness, Happiness. The greatest gift that I possess. I thank the Lord that I’ve been blessed…with more than my share of Haaaapiness!”♫   

In 1977 I accepted the Lord Jesus as my Lord and Savior.  My pastor’s wife, Arliss Freeman, loved to sing  ♫ Smile awhile and give your face a rest. Raise your hand to the one you love the best, Then shake hands with those nearby, And greet them with a smile! ♫    

There is a classic book titled “Happiest People on Earth” about a businessman, Demos Shakarian. God gave him a vision of millions of men all over the world who had blank looks on their faces.  He then was taken on a trip around the world and he saw that those same men had found the secret to becoming the "Happiest People on Earth".  With God's leading, Demos started the "Full Gospel Business Men's Fellowship International" that grew to over 8000 Chapters in 143 countries and is still leading Men to Jesus to this day.

The word “Happy” is also translated Blessed, Fortunate & Cheerful.  In Hebrew, avr (Aleph, Shin, Resh) means “Strength Peace Highest.”   What does the Bible tell us about “Smiling” and being “Happy”?

·      This may be the verse that inspired Demos Shakarian. “Happy are the people who are in such a state; Happy are the people whose God is the LORD!“ Psalm 144:15 NKJV

·      The Queen of Sheba saw something in Solomon’s court.  “How happy your men must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom!”   1 Kings 10:8 NIV

·      God Himself reminded Job - “Behold, happy is the man whom God corrects;…”  Job 5:17 NKJV

·      The Psalmist recognized the happiness of raising the children of one's youth.  “Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them;” Psalm 127:5 NKJV   Having raised 6 children, I can relate!

·      And who do we look to for hope?  “Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, Whose hope is in the LORD his God,” Psalm 146:5 NKJV

·      Let’s smile.  “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” Prov. 15:13 NIV

·      And when Paul had the opportunity to testify to King Agrippa, here is the start of his message – “I think myself happy, King Agrippa, because today I shall answer for myself before you concerning all the things of which I am accused by the Jews.” Acts 26:2 NKJV

Now we remember why we are the “Happiest People on Earth”!

-    We have the great spiritual reality of knowing that God has created us and wired his universe around us.

-    We know we have the grace of God and the unconditional love of God with new mercies every morning.

-    We love and are loved by our neighbors, our community and Brothers and Sisters in fellowship.

Points to ponder

Are all Christians known for their smiles and happiness?

What face, attitude and personality works best for effective evangelism?

Are we happy when God corrects us?  If not, why not?

Are you ready to tell somebody why you are so happy? 
Who put that smile on your face? 
How did He do it?
