Musing – What Are We Thinking About?

Hebraic Musing – What Are We Thinking About?
or  Should we be thinking about the “Day of the LORD” instead?

It is so easy and natural to focus on today’s problems, and we are facing many serious issues & crises!

When we focus on the series of disasters in today’s world, it is not at all easy to keep things in perspective.  Are we being gaslighted by these events dominating the news and dominating our media broadcasts and taking priority in the minds of Americans?  What are Americans (and Christians) focusing on?

High inflations; Dwindling retirement portfolios; Energy crisis; Violent crime wave; Surge in Fentanyl deaths; Supply chain disruptions; Illegal migrants crashing our borders; Mentally ill people walking the streets; Embracing CRT; WOKE Military; Left-wing classroom indoctrination; High rates of anxiety, depression & suicide among youth; Distrust of the media; Parental rights under fire; Children encouraged to question sex; Emboldened & aggressive China & Russia –  To name just a few current problems & crises.

And we cannot seem to get these depressing issues out of our minds.  How important are these daily concerns?

What will happen at the second coming of Jesus?  Might that event be much more important than all the current issues that occupy our mind and attention?  What does God promise us in the His Word, the Bible, about Jesus’ return?  The Bible has at least 80 references to The Second Coming of Jesus Christ.  Might this be the event we should be focused on?  And if we love our neighbor, shouldn’t we also be preparing them for that day?

Here’s just a sample of 12 Biblical references to an event we should be looking forward to:*

1.       Hebrews 9:28  -   So Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.

2.       1 Thessalonians 4:16-17  -   For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.

3.       Revelation 1:7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen.

4.       John 14:3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

5.       John 14:1-3 Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

6.       Titus 2:13 - Waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,

7.       Acts 1:11 And said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.

8.       John 6:39-40 And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

9.       Colossians 3:4 When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

10.   Acts 17:31 Because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

11.   James 5:7 Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains.

12.   Rev. 22:20 He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!

We just celebrated His first coming; let’s look to His next coming!

Points to ponder

If the Bible contains a theme 80+ times, should we take notice? (12 above + 68 below)

If we endure today, what do we have to look forward to?

What a day that will be, when my Jesus I shall see. And I look upon his face, who saved me by his grace...

2.       Matthew 24:36  -   “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.

3.       Matthew 24:44  -   Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.

4.       Luke 21:34-36  -   “But watch yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a trap. For it will come upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth. But stay awake at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

But know this, that if the master of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. And the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to what they had done. And the sea gave up the dead who were in it, Death and Hades gave up the dead who were in them, and they were judged, each one of them, according to what they had done. Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

13.   1 Thessalonians 4:13-18  -   But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For this we declare to you by a word from the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.

14.   Acts 1:10-11  -     And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

17.   Matthew 24:1-51    Jesus left the temple and was going away, when his disciples came to point out to him the buildings of the temple. But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.” As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?” And Jesus answered them, “See that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. ...

The great city was split into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell, and God remembered Babylon the great, to make her drain the cup of the wine of the fury of his wrath. And the beast that I saw was like a leopard; its feet were like a bear's, and its mouth was like a lion's mouth. And to it the dragon gave his power and his throne and great authority. One of its heads seemed to have a mortal wound, but its mortal wound was healed, and the whole earth marveled as they followed the beast. And they worshiped the dragon, for he had given his authority to the beast, and they worshiped the beast, saying, “Who is like the beast, and who can fight against it?” And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. ...

67.   Revelation 4:1-2  -   After this I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice, which I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the Spirit, and behold, a throne stood in heaven, with one seated on the throne.

Revelation 14:6-15  -   Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. And he said with a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water.” Another angel, a second, followed, saying, “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, she who made all nations drink the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality.” And another angel, a third, followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and its image and receives a mark on his forehead or on his hand, he also will drink the wine of God's wrath, poured full strength into the cup of his anger, and he will be tormented with fire and sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb

Musing – Merry Christmas, but When? Where? Myths? Whether?

Hebraic Musing – Merry Christmas, but When? Where? Myths? Whether?

When we did tours of the Holy Land, especially around Jerusalem, the guide would point out many historical sites and also told us which group or church had selected each particular site as where they believed the event(s) took place.  Whether that was the true site or not was hard to determine, but the need to designate ‘a site’ could easily have been for the sake of tourism.  So the question of where came up often.

My studies of the Torah and Old Testament and Hebraic culture leads me to question when the birth of Yeshua HaMashiach took place.  In fact, the prevailing belief is that He was born in Fall, during the feast of Tabernacles/Booths.  Reasons – it was in Fall when shepherds tended their flocks in the fields; and when the pilgrimage feast in Jerusalem would have filled the inns; and when Joseph and Mary would easily have been invited into a sukkah (for the night), etc.  Also, when was He born?  BC/AD 0, or 4-6BC?

The tradition of a Christmas pageant took place at our church and the title of the program was “Chris-myth Busters”.  The program was very well done in the way it exposed some of the myths around the traditional Christmas stories and understandings – three gifts, not necessarily three wise men!  It was in Fall, but now we celebrate in combination with the ‘sun god’ celebration in December!  There was not an innkeeper mentioned in the bible!  And there are many other myths like Santa, trees, chimney’s, reindeer, etc.

So there were questions while touring Israel about where the biblical events took place; and the studies of the OT reveal when other critical feasts were celebrated; and that many traditional Christmas beliefs and teachings are just myths.

However in all that touring and studying and reading, I find there is no question as to whether the events surrounding the birth of Yeshua HaMashiach took place!

Having said all that— I wish you a very Merry Christmas
and “L’Shanah Tovah”, Happy New Year.

Points to ponder

Which is more important?    When?   Where?   Myths?   or   whether!!!

How can we help others to recognize the significance of Christ’s birth?

Is singing Christmas Carols out loud a way of praying & witnessing publicly?

What child is this, who, laid to rest    On Mary's lap is sleeping?
Whom angels greet with anthems sweet     While shepherds watch are keeping?
This, this is Christ the King     Whom shepherds guard and angels sing
Haste, haste to bring him laud      The babe, the son of Mary

Musing – Confessing the Mezuzah’s Impact On Me!

Hebraic Musing – Confessing the Mezuzah’s Impact On Me!

Original published in 2011.

Just recently I routinely ‘kiss-touched’ the Mezuzah as I left the house and recited my little prayer “Thank you Lord for giving me Your commandments.”  And I found myself crying with tears of joy as I realized the change that has taken place in my life since we tacked those ‘little Jewish things’ to the door frames of our home.

A Hebraic Insight published a few years ago analyzed the Hebrew word for Sh’ma which is typically translated ‘Hear’.  And the prayer from Deut. 6:4 is recited at least 3 times a day by Jewish custom. "Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One."   In Hebrew – “Sh'ma Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu Adonai Echad.”

And then the continuing verses 5-9 come to mind.
Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.
Impress them on your children.
Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road,
when you lie down and when you get up.
Tie them as symbols on your hands
and bind them on your foreheads.
Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates
.” Deut. 6:4-9 NIV

Text

Description automatically generatedWhen we “hear” in this way we allow ourselves to concentrate on the significance of each mitzvah (good deed) with which we have been entrusted, and we remind ourselves that these are opportunities to reach out to God who has spoken to us.  Then, no commandment will ever seem small.  For example, take this commandment to remember His words: “Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” Deut. 6:9    And that “fixture” is called a Mezuzah.  Now I understand why my relatively new obedience to the Lord in affixing a Mezuzah on the front and side doors of our home has done a transformation in me.  As I enter and leave my home umpteen times a day I…
      - kiss my fingers and touch the mezuzah,
      - recite a prayer, “Thank you Lord for your commandments,” and
      - take a few moments to ponder the blessings I’ve received because of following His commands.

There are two distinctly different times in my daily life when I really need to be reminded of love and respect for my God:

1.      When I come home from a day in the world
and want to be a blessing at home, and...

2.      When I am leaving home to spend time in the world
and want to be a blessing to the world.

This has truly transformed my life since adopting this custom 15 years ago.
