Musing – Life Cycles of Great Nations, Application to America?

Hebraic Musing – Life Cycles of Great Nations, Application to America?

Study of the Old Testament and history reveals many life cycles of great nations that ended in collapse; a few Biblical examples – Babylon, Assyria, Egypt, Western & Eastern Roman Empires, as well as Israel’s 10 tribes & Judah’s tribes.  What brought about their decline and collapse?  “For the LORD brought Judah low because of Ahaz king of Israel, for he had encouraged moral decline in Judah and had been continually unfaithful to the LORD.” 2 Chronicles 28:19 NKJV   There are many more examples – Mayans, Incas, Greece, Venezuela, Yugoslavia, Soviet Union, Afghanistan, Haiti, No. Korea, Syria, Pakistan, Iraq, China, India, Egypt, Belgium, Germany, and smaller nations.  But there is a dramatic exception – Israel came back in 1947 after being gone for almost 2,000 years, a comeback supported by America, but is now turning her back Israel!

Here are seven stages that nations typically go through.  What can we in America learn from them?

1. Age of Outburst or Pioneering (From bondage to spiritual faith) – Discovery of a new nation across the pond; Seeking religious freedom; Declaring Independence; Drafting their Constitution; Defining purpose; Colonization; Blessed geographically between two oceans; Abundant natural resources; etc.

2. Age of Conquests (From spiritual faith to great courage) – Required pioneering spirit to conquer & develop the frontier; Unification of purpose in Revolutionary war, Civil war, and role of International Policeman & Peace-maker in WW1 & WWII;; etc.

3. Age of Commerce (From courage to liberty) – Prosperity from a developed & refined industrial age; Judeo/Christian work ethic & morality; Stable & internationally recognized currency; etc.

4. Age of Affluence (From liberty to abundance & selfishness) – Financial wealth after WWII; Industrial & international trading capabilities; pension & retirement plans; affordable welfare; Two wage earners per family to “keep up with Joneses”; Chromed Automobiles; etc.

5. Age of Intellect (From abundance to complacency & apathy) – Younger generations enjoying wealth; Omnipresent, Omniscient, Omnipotent technology explosion (less need for religion); Focus on the me, myself & I trinity; Ungodly Morality; Government knows best; Morality enforced by a police state (instead of Judeo/Christian internalized morality); Governed by Mega-billionaires; Divisive racism; Disrespect of others; Destruction  of Family, Marriage & gender identity; Immoral entertainment; etc.

6. Age of Decadence (From apathy to dependence) – Promotion of Woke, godlessness, social welfare & entitlement; Increased Alcoholism, Drugs/Pharmaceuticals; Inflationary Gov’t spending; Top-down Government no longer “for the people”; Fake news; Political divisiveness; Open border; Promotion of  a “One World Government” lead by Satan(?); Allowing World-wide conquests in Ukraine, So. Korea, Taiwan, Israel; Living in fear while losing respect, love & care for others; etc.

7. Age of Decline and Collapse (From dependence back into bondage) – Runaway Inflation; Critical reliance on other nations - China, Russia & Saudi Arabia; Loss of respect by other nations; etc.

Jesus tried to warn us of these days.  “But take heed to yourselves, lest your hearts be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness, and cares of this life, and that Day come on you unexpectedly. For it will come as a snare on all those who dwell on the face of the whole earth.” Luke 21:34-35 NKJV

Unfortunately, here are today’s typical reactions to this message from American, and Christians:
 - Ignoring      – “We shall see”;    Normalcy bias;   “What does this have to do with me?”
 - Justifying    – “We help others as good neighbors”;  “Capitalism makes money off the less fortunate.”
 - Concerned – “America needs to get right in 2023, or get a whooping” (Tom Hatley, my Pastor)
 - Humorous   – “Will we need to learn to speak Chinese or Russian or Arabic?”  (>:

Points to Ponder

Q – What does the Bible actually say about America?     A – Nothing!

How many more sins has Satan introduced recently to destroy this world?

What would our Founding Fathers and WWII Vets think of today’s politics and positions?

Can our nation recover with a “Great Awakening”?

Be bold! Be strong! For the Lord your God is with you. I am not afraid, I am not dismayed, Because I’m walking in faith and victory, Come on and walk in faith and victory, For the Lord, your God is with you..

Musing – Can We Rich Americans Enter the Kingdom of God?

Hebraic Musing – Can We Rich Americans Enter the Kingdom of God?

We Americans have the best standard of living in the world.  We are the richest country in the world with almost 30% of the entire world's net worth or wealth.  And we have less than 5% of the world’s population!  Those in the bottom 10% of our standard of living are about as well off as those in the top 10% in other countries.  If Americans are that well off, why do so many families think they “need two incomes to survive”?

When Jesus told the rich man how to get to eternal life, the rich man was sorrowful and went away.  When Jesus saw that that the rich man became very sorrowful, He said to His disciples - “Assuredly, I say to you that it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.  And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” Matt.19:23-24 NKJV

Since we Americans are deemed to be rich, maybe we need to understand why Jesus said that being rich might be a problem?  Some hinderances caused by our wealth might be:

·      Our riches tend to make us satisfied with this life, instead of longing for the age to come.

·      Sometimes riches are sought at the expense of seeking God.  My personal testimony – too much time was given to “earning a living” in order to satisfy all our wants instead simply our needs.

·      Riches can encourage a spirit of false independence.  Remember the problem in the lukewarm church of Laodicea?  Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’ —and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked— Revelation 3:17 NKJV.

·      We’ve often assumed (or we thought, or we were taught) that riches were a sign of God’s blessing and favor; and then we don’t recognize our sinfulness and our need for His grace.

Jesus has a lot to say in Luke 12 about our riches, treasures, etc.:
 - Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.” v.15
 - But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’  So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” vs.20-21
 - For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”  v.34.

And here are a few proverbs to ponder about riches:
 - “A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold.” Prov.22:1
 - “He who trusts in his riches will fall, But the righteous will flourish like foliage.” Prov.11:28
 - “Will you set your eyes on that which is not?  For riches certainly make themselves wings; They fly away like an eagle toward heaven.” Prov.23:5

Summary - Jesus is not saying that all poor people and none of the wealthy enter the kingdom of heaven.  That would exclude Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to say nothing of David, Solomon, and Joseph of Arimathea.  Those men were examples of devotion and proper use of wealth.  What did Solomon, the famously rich man, do with his wealth?  Here’s the speech he gave upon completion of the Temple – “Now it was in the heart of my father David to build a temple for the name of the LORD God of Israel....... and I have built a temple for the name of the LORD God of Israel.” 1 Kings 8:17&20

Points to Ponder

How might our wealth be used to build the Temple of the LORD?

Why do the poor prosecuted Christians in other countries stand so strong?
Are we the spoiled King’s Kids?

Which is stronger?    Forged or Cast steel?    Forged or Cast Faith?

In contrast to the rich young ruler, Jesus’ disciples did leave all to follow Him.

I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold. I'd rather be His than have riches untold.
I'd rather have Jesus than houses or land.  I'd rather be led by His nail-pierced hand.

Musing – I Wish I had Only Good News to Share, But...

Hebraic Musing – I Wish I had Only Good News to Share, But...

There is a biblical warning to the watchman.  But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood.”  Ezekiel 33:6 NIV   I don’t want that blood on my hands, and I am sure you would not want that blood on your hands either.

This reminds me of a favorite old song.    Blow the trumpet in Zion, Zion; Sound the alarm in My Holy Mountain. Blow the trumpet in Zion, Zion; Sound the alarm...     It’s right from the book of Joel which also tells us why the alarm – “Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming. It is close at hand— a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness....”  Joel 2:1-2 NIV

How much longer is God expected or required to put up with our Nation?  Consider that...
 - America is a nation founded on “trust in God”.
 - America is a nation blessed with great natural resources in a strategical geographic location.
 - America is a nation blessed with incredible wealth, prosperity and quality of life.
 - America WAS a nation with the ability and willingness to be a world-wide peacemaker.

But now, we have been taken over by ungodly decisions flowing from and through a government which is blatantly ignoring God’s commandments and counsel.  They/we are actually flaunting sin in God’s face in so many ways!!!  (See the footnote recapping Today’s News)   I want to be sure my friends, family and all people are aware of what lies ahead as America and the world continue to ignore God’s guidance.

Can God stop this ungodly direction/movement?  Yes, He can.  But why should He?  He has given people a choice; and it is clear that choices are being made.  The sides are more definitive and divisive than ever!

Jesus knew these days were coming; He described these days clearly; He told us what to do; and He told us the final result.  Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.  And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.” Matthew 24:12-14 NIV   Who will be saved?

Are the Americans and the world suffering from “Normalcy Bias”?  Normalcy Bias is a cognitive bias which leads people to disbelieve or minimize threat warnings.  Consequently, individuals underestimate the likelihood of a disaster, when it might affect them, and its potential adverse effects.  A Normalcy Bias makes it difficult to engage in “worst-case” thinking and plan for a serious failure or disaster.  (Example – In WWII, why did 6 million Jews climb aboard railroad cars?  A – Normalcy Bias)

Why do I/we need to share the bad news?    A#1 - The good news won’t hurt you.  A#2 – I love you.

Points to Ponder

What is your choice, to go along to get along, or to stand up for what is right
and be willing to blow the trumpet?   Which is it?

Has the whole world heard the Gospel?
Who decides when the last person has made his/her choice?

Does all this encourage us to “Go tell it on the mountain...”

First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come,
scoffing and following their own evil desires
.”  2 Peter 3:3

Musing – How Well have We Paid Attention to Jesus’ Teachings?

Hebraic Musing – How Well have We Paid Attention to Jesus’ Teachings?

In the “Beatitudes” in Matthew Chapters 5-7 we have been given three whole chapters of Jesus’ teachings in memorable passages.  Let’s see how much we’ve retained by completing a few of His “red letter” sentences.

How many of Jesus statements were you able to finish?   And this is only a sampling of the “Beatitudes”!  Jesus went on with Chapter 6 & 7 below!  Here’s an opportunity to continue the memory test.

Points to ponder

What is the Greatest Teacher of all time trying to tell us?

Do the “Beatitudes” describe the goal for all of us who dare to follow as His disciple?

Seek ye first the kingdom of God And His righteousness; And all these things shall be added unto you.
